Our line follows Simon.

Charlie Snook submitted his DNA to Dr. Maurice Snook who submitted it for testing.  The test results came back in February 2008 confirming that Adam is of the Simon Snook line.  This is significant as it proves our family line back to Simon Snook.

Simon Snook (Snoke), first of six children of Henry and Maria (Mary) Elisabeth Snook.

Born 1747 in Frederick, MD, USA , died 1814 in Frederick.  Simon married Charlotte Keller on February 9, 1768 in Frederick.

Charlie Snook found the information on Helen Keller in this family.

Charlotte Keller was the daughter of Conrad Keller and Barbara Glaar.  She was born 1740 in Maryland.  Charlotte died December 1815 in Frederick.   Her parents were Conrad Keller and Barbara Glaar.   Conrad was born 14 Mar 1706 in Bassersdorf, Zurich, Switzerland.  Barbara was born about 1703.   Charlotte's brother, Casper, had a son, David born 1 Mar 1788 in Frederick County, Maryland.  David married Mary Fairfax Moore and together they had a child, Arthur Henley Keller.  Arthur married Kate Adams in July 1878.  They had 2 children:  Mildred Campbell Keller born after 1880 and Helen Adams Keller, born 27 Jun 1880 in Tuscumbia, Colbert County, Alabama.

The American Foundation for the Blind website at http://www.afb.org/ about Helen Keller in part says the following:

The story of Helen Keller is the story of a child who, at the age of 19 months, suddenly lost her hearing and vision, and who, against overwhelming odds and with a great deal of persistence, grew into a highly intelligent and sensitive woman who wrote, spoke, and labored incessantly for the betterment of others. So powerful a symbol of triumph over adversity did she become that she has a definite place in the history of our time and of times to come.

Helen Adams Keller was born a healthy child in Tuscumbia, Alabama, U.S. on June 27, 1880 in a white, frame cottage called "Ivy Green." On her father's side she was descended from Alexander Spottswood, a colonial governor of Virginia, who was connected with the Lees and other Southern families. On her mother's side, she was related to a number of prominent New England families, including the Hales, the Everetts, and the Adamses. Her father, Captain Arthur Keller, was the editor of a newspaper, the North Alabamian. Captain Keller also had a strong interest in public life and was an influential figure in his own community. In 1885, under the Cleveland administration, he was appointed Marshal of North Alabama.

The illness that struck the infant Helen Keller, and left her deaf and blind before she learned to speak, was diagnosed as brain fever at the time; perhaps it was scarlet fever. As Helen Keller grew from infancy into childhood she was wild and unruly, and had little real understanding of the world around her.

Of course, we all know the story of Helen Keller through the movie "The Miracle Worker."

The following is from The History and Genealogy of the Snook Families of Frederick County Maryland  by Dr. Maurice E Snook, 1980:    He is named as a son in his father’s will.  The Mononacy Church records list Simon Schnock, single person, newly confirmed – 1767.  …………..On Easter Sunday 3 April 1768, Simon and his new bride Scharlotta attended communion at Monacacy Reformed Church.  In 1770, Simon and his wife attended communion in the Glade Reformed Church.  A year later his son Heinrich was baptized in that church (21 July 1771).  The sponsors were Simon’s father and mother.  Simon and Charlotta were sponsors at the baptism of Daniel Oehl’s daughter (1783), their own daughter, Elizabeth (1785) their granddaughter Sussanna Kern (1799), and their granddaughter Sussanna Snook (1801).

In the records of the Committee of Observation of the Middle District of Frederick Co., MD- 1776 ("Maryland Historical Magazine", Vol. 11, p.316), the Committee imposed fines for misbehavior on members of Mordecai Bell's Company.  Simon Snook was fined 2 shillings.  This proves Simon served his country in the Revolutionary War.  He is the only Snook in the two genealogies known at this time to have served.

Children:

Adam Snook             b:  1769 in Frederick       d. Aft. 1840

Heinrich Snoke              b:  1771 in Frederick

Jacob Snook                 b:  1774 in Frederick

Henry Snook                 b:

Margaret Snook             b:  1779

Solomon Snoke             b:  18 Mar 1780 in Frederick

John Snook                  b:  1785 in Frederick

Elizabeth Snook            b:   21 May 1785

Jacob Snook married and had six children:  Lydia Ann, Anna Elizabeth, Daniel, Jacob, Simon, and Maria.

Margaret married Jacob Karn (b:  1775).

Elizabeth Snook married John Gaugh in 1818.

The following genealogical information is from Dr. Maurice E. Snook's book: The History and Genealogy of the Snook family in Frederick County Maryland, retrieved from Charles (Charlie) Snook website.

Adam Snook 1769 -  1st of 7 children of Simon (1747) and Charlotte (Keller) Snook.   He died after 1840.

The following is abstracted from the "History and Genealogy of the Snook Families of Frederick County, MD" (p.18-19).

Adam Snook was born 1769 in Frederick, Maryland.

"In the census and deeds he is usually distinguished from the other Adam Snooks by the designation "Adam Snook of Simon or Adam Snook of S."  I could not find any records of his birth or marriage.

The census indicates Adam was born 1768/70.  The ages of his children indicate he was married c. 1795-97. His wife was Sophia [Martin?] as proven by deeds from Frederick Co. Three of his children were baptised in the Creagerstown Lutheran/Reformed Church in 1799, 1801 and 1817.

The children of Adam and Sophia Martin:

            Mary Snook                               b: 21 May 1797

            George Michael Snook               b: 17 Jun 1799

            John Snook                              b: c 1800

            Margaret Snook                         b: 1806

            Charlotte Snook                         b: 1810/1815

            Agnes Rebecca Snook               b: 13 Sep 1811

            William Snook                           b: 1812/1813

Holdcraft's "Names in Stone" lists a Mary Barrick, daughter of Adam Snook and wife of Cornelius Barrick.  Since all of the children for the other Adam Snooks (SN-4, S‑2, S‑2B) are known, Mary Snook Barrick must be a daughter of this Adam."

The postulated list of children agrees fairly well with the census records, no inconsistences were found in that all children were present in Adam's household from their birth until they married.  Since George is not listed on the 1840 nor 1850 censuses, perhaps he died between 1830-40.  The census also indicates that Sophia died 1830‑40 and Adam died 1840/50.

Only Adam's daughter, Mary, was carried forward extensively in the "History and Genealogy of the Snook Families of Frederick County , MD" and she remains the youngest child.

Per Dr. Snook’s book, in 1817, the Chancery Court of Fred. Co. ordered Adam to give 93-1/4 acres of land called “Third Divided and Whitehall Beginning” to Jacob Cramer and Jacob Crist to satisfy Adam’s indebtedness of $3000 to H.G. Waters.  The land bordered on the road from Frederick to Creagerstown but I have not found in the deeds of Frederick County where Adam bought the land.  It could be the same land Adam an Adam Snook bought …which totaled 100 acres.  In 1821, Jacob Cramer, Jacob Crist and Adam Snook sold the land to Philip H. Cramer with Adam holding the mortgage.  More of the land was sold to Philip in 1823.  I have found no other deeds pertaining to this Adam Snook.

Henry Snook, 1771 - 2ndt of 7 children of Simon (1747) and Charlotte (Keller) Snook

Henry was baptized 21 July 1771 in the Glade Reformed Church, Walkersville.  His grandparents, Henry and Elizabeth were present.

Henry bought land called “Sure Blind, Sure Find” from Philip Morningstar, Jr. for $40 in 1808 and sold it to John Clem for $100 in 1814.  In 1822, he bought 124 acres of land called “The Force Put” which was part of the resurvey of “Miller’s Chance” and sold it in 1827.  Neither Henry nor his wife Elizabeth left wills or adm. accts in Frederick County .  Henry possibly moved to Ohio .   The History and Genealogy of the Snook Families of Frederick County Maryland by Dr. Maurice E Snook, 1980

Jacob Snook, 17743rd of 7 children of Simon (1747) and Charlotte (Keller) Snook married Anna Maria and had seven children:

Daniel Snook                 b:  21 Oct 1799      d:  29 Dec 1886      m:  Anna Margaret Hill

Elizabeth Snook            b:  1 May 1798       d:  6 Mar 1889         m1:  Jacob Ramsburg  m2: Casper Ramsburg

Lydia Ann Snook           b:  1801  d: 1870                                   m: Frederick Ramsburg

Jacob Snook                 b:  30 Mar 1804      d:  18 Jul 1870         m1: Elizabeth Ramsburg  m2: Treseann Baney

Catherine Snook            b:  15 Mar 1806      d:  abt 1815

Maria Jane Snook          b:  16 Mar 1809                                      m:  Peter Houck

Simon Snook                 b:  2 Oct 1811        d:  12 Aug 1884       m1:  Susannah Elizabeth Gilds  m2:  Elizabeth Staley

Dr. Maurice E. Snook’s The History and Genealogy of the Snook Families of Frederick County, MD states:

Chancery Court Proceedings of Fred. Co., Md. (1816-18, 101, p 234-40) 9 Dec 1815 "...Simon Snook, deceased, died intestate...was sezied of a large tract of land which descended to Adam Snook, Henry Snook, Solomon Snook, John Snook, Jacob and Margaret Karn...and Elizabeth Snook, Daniel Snook, Lydia Snook, Jacob Snook, Maria Snook and Simon Snook who are infants and issue of Jacob Snook, one of the sons of Simon....." proves Jacob's relationship to Simon.

Jacob did not buy land in Fred. Co, but his wife did.  In 1817 Mary Snook (widow) paid $280 to Jacob Measel for a tract of land called "New Germany" containing 2-1/2 acres.  ....."At the request of Julian Baney this deed is recorded 15 July 1833.  Whereas Mary Snook, widow of Fred. Co., departed this life sometime in May in the year of our Lord, 1833, leaving at the time of her death the following children her heirs at law to wit:  Daniel Snook, Jacob Snook, Simon Snook, Elizabeth who intermarried with Jacob Remsburg, Lydia who intermarried with Frederick Remsburg, Maria who intermarried with Peter Houck who are all above the age of 21 and whereas Mary Snook died intestate being seized........of  a tract of land called 'New Germany'....this indenture made 15 June 1833 between Daniel Snook and wife Anna, Jacob Snook and wife Elizabeth, Simon Snook, Jacob Remsburg and wife Elizabeth, Frederick Remsburg and wife Lydia, Peter Houck and wife Maria ... sell to Julian Baney ...for $175 ...land called 'New Germany'.

Mrs. Mary C (Snook) Stuff of Lewistown, MD contributed the following to Dr Maurice Snook:  Tombstone on the farm of Raymond Hubbard (1974) who lives near Utica contained the inscription J.S. 1811.  The Hubbards also found a Bible in the farmhouse containing the following entry among others:  Jacob, son of Jacob and Mary Snook was b 30 Mar 1804 in the state of MD.  This is obviously the Bible of Jacob's son and the tombstone is Jacob Snook's (1774)

Margaret Snook, 17794th of 7 children of Simon (1747) and Charlotte (Keller) Snook married Jacob Karn (b:  1775).  Margaret Snooks marriage is recorded as Jacob Kern & Margaretha Schnook 1 Jun 1797.  Witnesses were John Kern and Daniel Ehl.  She had one daughter, Susanna Karn (Carn) born 15 Jun 1799, baptized 4 Aug 1799 in the Glade Reformed Church.  They possibly had as many as six children.

Solomon Snook, 1780  - 5th of 7 children of Simon (1747) and Charlotte (Keller) Snook

All information on Solomon was taken from Dr Maurice Snook’s book, The History and Genealogy of the Snook Families of Frederick County, MD, 1980.  In the 1810 Census, Solomon had 4 children aged less than 10 which indicates that Solomon was married between 1800 and 1804.  The census also indicates that he may have had as many as 9 children and that he moved to Jefferson Co., VA between 1820 and 1830.  .......

Frederick Town Herald - Saturday, the 15th of March 1823:  Snook _____ second son of Solomon, Thursday evening last a few miles from Frederick, three sons of Mr. Solomon Snook with the son of Mr. jacob Geesey lads of 10-14 years of age were amusing themselves at the smithshop of Mr. Geesey when young Geesey went into the shop observing a gun standing in the corner, brought it out unconscious no doubt of it being charged, gun went off, second son of Mr. Snook expired, carlessness.  (Holdcraft Newspaper files)

In 1813, Solomon bought 6 acres of land called “Six Acres Added” for $500 from Jacob Shriver.  The land was located on the road from Frederick to Creagerstown.  When Solomon sold the land in 1815, his wife is named Elizabeth .  In 1816, Solomon, along with his brother John, bought 111 acres of “Loss Gained” which their father had purchased in 1777.  Solomon sold his share of the land in 1821.

After Solomon moved to Virginia, the following loan was recorded in 1843:  “…Whereas Solomon Snook of Harper’s Ferry, Jefferson County, Virginia being moved by feelings of friendship to me Bushrod S Pine to whom he is also connected by marriage hath agreed to loan me certain household and kitchen furniture and other personal property to be used by me….”  All the items loaned are listed in the deed (about 50) and among them were two “likenesses.”

Solomon and Bushrod Pine formed a partnership and had a store in Harper’s Ferry:  “…deed made 17 Apr 1845 by and between Bushrod S. Pine, surviving partner of the late firm of Solomon Snook and Bushrod S. Pine as partners trading under the name and firm of Snook and Pine….Pine sells the stock of goods, wares and merchandise, store fixtures, scales, weights, measures, etc. now in possession of Pine at and in the warehouse on Shenandoah St. in Harpers Ferry now occupied by Pine.  Also all groceries and other goods…late of said firm now in the cellar on the opposite side of said street in the house of said Pine…”  Dennis Snook was to sell the goods and give the money to William Snook, who was the largest creditor.

Solomon Snook died intestate in 1845 and an inventory and appraisement of his property was made 10 May 1845 by order of the April Court of Jefferson Co., VA.  The final account made in 1847 lists William Snook as administrator but no heirs are named.  In the Harpers Ferry Cemetery are buried Solomon and some of his family.

Children of Solomon and Elizabeth Snook:

            Eli Snook                                  b:  1801 or 1808

            Joshua Snook                            b:  1 Dec 1806

            Samuel Snook                           b:  10 Feb 1809

            Solomon Snook                         b: 2 May 1811

            Benjamin M Snook                     b:  1810-1820 (1814 from tombstone)

            Adeline Elizabeth Snook b:  7 Oct 1816

            Dennis Snook                            b:  1820  (prob 1818 or 1819)

            William S Snook                        b:  23 Dec 1820

In the1850 Harper’s Ferry, Virginia census, Elizabeth Snook, age 65, was living with the Bushrod (census looks like Bushouse) & Adeline Pine family.

John Snook, 1800 - 6th of 7 children of Simon (1747) and Charlotte (Keller) Snook.

All information on John was taken from Dr Maurice Snook’s book, The History and Genealogy of the Snook Families of Frederick County, MD, 1980. John is usually referred to in the census and deeds as John Snook of S or of Simon.  He is named in his father’s adm. accts.  There is no record of his birth and we must rely on the census.

1850 Census -  John is not listed however, his son Jerome Snook is living with Daniel and Catherine (Snook) Mainhart.  This is important because on the 1870 Census of Frederick County, a John Snook, age 82 is living with the Mainharts.  This is obviously John Snook son of Simon (b 1788) living with his daughter.

"John was probably b.ca.1800.  One church record was found for this John in the Creagerstown Luth./Ref. Church: George William Snook b. 25 Jan 1823, bap. 25 Jan 1824; parents: John and Eleanor Snook.  There are no John Snooks listed on the 1820 census of MD.  A John Snook is listed on the 1830 census of Frederick Co., MD and 3 Mumford households are listed immediately after him.

The land deeds show that John’s wife was Harriet.  Marriage records of Frederick County list:  John Snook & Harriet Gittinger – 23 Aug 1811.  The records of Frederick Evangelical Reformed Church list the baptisms of 4 of John’s children.  The Glade Church records give additional information:  (1) John Snook m Harriet had daughter Charlotte Henrietta b 12 oct 1833m buried 21 Jun 1835 aged 1y2m7d; (2) Henrietta Snook wife of John buried 15 Oct 18(33) aged 35.  (Note the year was not given but the last dated entry was 1833.) Thus, it would appear that John’s wife died of childbirth.  An additional child has been deduced as Henrietta, b 1829.  She is listed on the 1850 census of Frederick County in the household of Jonathan Brunner which immediately preceeds the household of Daniel Mainhart referred to above.  The 1830 census indictes there was another son b 1810-1815 and daughter b 1810-1815 who remain unknown.

In 1816, John, along with his brother Solomon, bought 111 acres of land called “Loss Gained” which their father purchased in 1777.  John bought out his brother’s share in 1821 and sold it to Daniel Snook who sold it to John Snook and Frederick Snook in 1831.  They in turn sold it to George Bowersox in 1842.

John died between 1870 and 1880 but left no will or administrative accounts in Frederick County .

Children of John and Harriet (Gittinger) Snook:

            Samuel Snook                           b:  7 Mar 1816

            Louisa Elizabeth Snook              b:  3 May 1818

            Catherine Snook                        b:  1824

            Barbara Elizabeth Snook            b:  26 Nov 1830

            Jerome Augustus Snook b:  3 Aug 1832

            Charlotte Henrietta Snook           b:  13 Oct 1833              d:  21 Jun 1835

Elizabeth Snook, 1785 - 7th of 7 children of Simon (1747) and Charlotte (Keller) Snook.  Church records give Elizabeth Snook's birth as 21 May 1785 and baptism as 4 Sep 1785.

Marriage record of Frederick County list Elizabeth Snook & John Gaugh -  22 Mar 1806. Frederick Evangelical Reformed Church list Johannes Gach & Eliza Schnoog – 25 Mar 1806.  This serves to point out that the date in the courthouse is not the actual date of marriage but the date the license was obtained.  John Gaugh probably remarried but that has not been checked.  A John Gaugh appears on the 1820 census of Frederick County (p 163) three pages after Simon’s other children.  A John Gaugh left a will in Frederick County written 19 Jan 1838, probated 10 Apr 1856 in which he names wife Elizabeth and children Daniel, Julianna, and Eve.  The children agree with the census for John.

(All information on Elizabeth is from Dr Maurice Snook’s book, The History and Genealogy of the Snook Families of Frederick County Maryland, 1980 )

This concludes the information from the “History and Genealogy of the Snook Families of Frederick County, MD” which was published in 1980.
